Administrators, teachers, students, parents, and staff regularly practice mindfulness at the Green Valley Garden of the American School in Bangkok. Mindfulness fosters a loving environment and cultivates empathy and compassion within the school culture. We teach students to care for and respect their parents and teachers. We train them to be effective leaders who respond well to crises. We want our students to feel that their thoughts and feelings are being heard. We emphasize the following three mindfulness skills:
A person knows what he or she is thinking. Positive thinking is important for maintaining a healthy mental state. The mind is formed by feelings, perceptions, and experiences. When a person uses the correct techniques to transform negative thoughts into positive ones, that person is considered to be practicing mindfulness.
People are aware that they are talking to the right person at the right time. When a person speaks truthfully with positive intentions and avoids saying things that hurt others, that person is considered to be practicing mindful speech.
People become aware of the thoughts and feelings of others. When a person listens without speaking, with empathy, listening to what the other person says and feeling what the other person doesn't say, that person is practicing mindful listening.
